The majority of the physicians have obtained their education in Bulgaria. Admission to the medical university is very challenging, and only the best students continue their studies as doctors. Only 16 percent of applicants are admitted. The medical education in Bulgaria lasts for at least six years. It comprises of a workload of approximately 4700 academic hours of well-coordinated theoretical and practical training and 45 exams. The study is completed after 310 days of practical training and successfully passing six state exams. To be recognised as a specialist, a medical graduate should take between four and six additional years for post-graduate training and completing with final theoretical and practical examinations. Besides this, the Bulgarian health care system ensures that all physicians and medical staff regularly participate in Continuing Medical Education Program.
